At the April meeting of the Board the following issues were discussed
and are of interest
to county residents:
Gypsy Moth Spraying
There will be a spray program within the county this Spring. The point of contact for the program in Garrett County is Willie Lantz, University of Maryland Extension Service, telephone number 301-334-6960. Funding for the program is from the county, state and federal sources.
State Forestry Centennial Book
A book, mostly pictures, of the history of the state forest and park service, centennial edition is available for sale at the Historical Society Museum for $21.00.
Natural Resource Conservation Conference
This annual program for high school students will be held at the Hickory Environmental Education Center, July 22 – 28, 2007. Two scholarships are available from the Forestry Board. Interested students should call their guidance office or contact a member of the Garrett Forestry Board. Application forms are on our website!
State Big Tree Program
The Board decided to participate and will begin the program in May 2007. Landowners who think they have a “big tree” of any species, can contact the Forestry Board Chairman or the local county Forester.

1. Reforestation. Until the 1920’s forests were generally logged and abandoned. Now, across the country an average of 1.7 billion seedlings are planted annually. That translates into 6 seedlings planted for every tree harvested. In addition, billions are regenerated naturally.
