Charles N. Hoffeditz, Chairperson

He graduated from Washington State University with a B.S. in Forest Management (1964) and received his Ph.D. from the University of Washington in Forest and Snow Hydrology (1970). Chuck worked as a forester and snow ranger early in his career and after graduate school went on to work for the National Weather Service in their Hydrologic Research Laboratory in Silver Spring Maryland. In 1998 he assumed the responsibility of the Chief of the Laboratory until his retirement.

Carl O. “Mac” McIntire

Mac graduated in1961 with BS in Forestry from Pennsylvania State University. He served in the US Navy as Communications Officer on the USS Taluga in the Western Pacific, was a Forester with the Tahoe National Forest, and became the Distribution Center Manager for McIntire Hardware. Mac was the owner of Sewells Ace Hardware in Elliott City Md. for 19 years prior to his retirement in 2000.

Karin Miller

Karin Miller, Executive Director, Maryland Forests Association (http://mdforests.org ). BS degree Forestry and Environmental Resource Management, SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (1981), teaching licenses in Secondary Science, and a facilitator for Project Learning Tree, Project WILD and Project WET. She lives in Grantsville with her husband Pete and children Mike and Dan.

Edward J. Golden

Ed is a retired Wildlife Biologist from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. B.S. degree in Wildlife Management & Conservation from the University of Wyoming (1966). For 34 years Ed worked as a Biologist in New Jersey, Connecticut, and as District Wildlife Manager for Garrett County, Regional Wildlife Manager for the four Western Maryland Counties, Regional Wildlife Habitat Biologist, and State-wide Forest Wildlife Supervisor. He is a 22 year member of the Land Reclamation Committee for mining. Ed and his wife Sonya (Sunny) reside in Accident and are the parents of three grown daughters

Paul Shogren

A Pennsylvanian by birth and training, BS in Forestry 1951 Penn State, Pittsburgh Theological Seminary 1963 M. Divinity. U. S. Marine Corps 1951-54 (Korean War 1 yr.), Army Reserves – 18 yrs, retired Staff Sgt. Work experience – 30 yrs U.S. Forest Service, Soil Conservation Service, Office of Surface Mining. Community Service in BSA 65 yrs, Eagle Scout, Silver Beaver, Church Officer & Teacher, Historical Society, Habitat for Humanity, Christian Crossing Thrift Shop, 4H Leader, and American Legion Officer.

Ernest L. Metz, Jr.

Ernie is a Maryland DNR Forest Service employee and serves as the secretary and Forest Service advisor to the Garrett Count Forestry Board. He attended Valley High School from 1961 to 1967 and Potomac State College from 1967 to 1968. He attended West Virginia University and graduated in December 1971 with a B. S. degree in Forest Resource Management. From 1972 to 1974 Ernie worked for the Park and Shade Tree Department in Summit, New Jersey and in 1974 moved back to Maryland and became the Project Forester for the Northern portion of Garrett County. In 1981 he became the Maryland Forest Service Project Manager for all of Garrett County.

Joseph L. Winters

Joseph L. Winters retired in August 2003 as Coordinator of Hickory, Garrett County Schools Environmental Education Center after 23 years. Previously, he was a county-wide science resource teacher, classroom instructor (grades 7 – 12) and the Junior – Senior High School Administrative Assistant in Garrett County. In 2002 he was the recipient of the Richard A. Johnson Environmental Education Award presented by the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science Appalachian Laboratory for his role as a mentor to future leaders in promoting environmental stewardship.

Phillip (Phil) Kisner

Phillip (Phil) Kisner is a Procurement Forester for Wood Products, Inc. in Oakland, Maryland. Phil attended Allegany Community College and graduated with a BS degree in Forest Resource Management from West Virginia University in Morgantown, WV where he was a member of Xi Sigma Pi. While at Allegany Community College he was nominated to the National Honor Society of Forest Technology. Phil began his career with Allegheny Wood Products Inc. in Petersburg, WV in 1995 and in 1997 moved to Wood Products, Inc. in Oakland Md. Phil and his wife and family reside in Friendsville, Maryland.

Michael R. Kozier

Mike Graduated from West Virginia University in 1976 with a BS in Forest Resources Management. Mike has also completed additional graduate work for Masters in Agriculture. He has worked with DNR and also private industry until 1983. He started working with USDA/Farm Service Agency and continues in that position to the present. He is on the Potomac/Garrett Forest Advisory Board; Garrett Forestry Board; Assistant Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 1 in Oakland, MD; Assistant Soccer Coach and as an Adjunct instructor of Forestry At Garrett College from 1978 to 1999.

Frederick A. Holliday

Fred is a U.S. Army Veteran. He served 15 years as Mayor of the city of Grantsville, Maryland. Former business owner in the Town of Grantsville Maryland for 27 years; Fred is currently serving his second term as County Commissioner for Garrett County; Serving on the MACo [Maryland Association of Counties] Board of Directors and the University of Maryland Institute for Governmental Service Advisory Board. Commissioner Holliday and his wife Joan reside in Avilton, Maryland.

Marshall Stacy

Marshall Stacy, 62, has been a full-time Christmas tree grower since 1970. He and his wife, Cindy, own and operate a 315-acre tree plantation, Pinetum, in Swanton. Marshall wholesales and retails trees, especially large, sheared evergreens.

His innovations in tree farm management and production have earned him recognition. He was named Mid-Atlantic tree farmer in 1986. He holds a B.S. degree in business from the University of Maryland at College Park, where he also studied horticulture. He is a member of the Maryland and National Christmas Tree Associations, the Maryland Forests Association and the Savage River State Forest Advisory Committee.
